An immersive experience near the Château de Servanes in Mouriès
From 19 April 2024, plunge into the heart of Ancient Egypt with the immersive exhibition at the Carrières de Lumières in Les Baux-de-Provence. This experience, orchestrated by Culturespaces Studio® under the artistic direction of Virginie Martin and produced by Cutback, takes you on a journey through three millennia of one of the most fascinating civilisations in history.
A journey to the time of the Pharaohs
The exhibition begins with the rediscovery of ancient Egypt, as it appeared to French scientists during the Egyptian Campaign of 1798 to 1801. Inspired by the drawings of David Roberts, it gives you the impression of being "a people of dwarfs visiting a nation of giants". Mythological tales and Egyptian cosmogony come to life on the walls of the Carrières, revealing the sacred struggles of the gods and the emergence of early man.
The Nile, source of life
Your journey continues along the Nile, a symbol of life and prosperity in ancient Egypt. The river's floods and seasons provided the fertile silt essential to a luxuriant flora and fauna. Discover the daily life of the Egyptians through magnificently restored bas-reliefs, paintings and papyri.
Monuments and dynasties
Witness the construction of the pyramids, true architectural prodigies, and be impressed by the majesty of the Sphinx. Monumental sculptures of pharaohs from Khephren to Nefertiti dominate the space, while epic battles such as that of Qadech under Ramses II are dynamically depicted.
Temples and tombs
Explore the hundreds of temples dedicated to Egyptian deities, from Luxor to Abu Simbel. These complexes served as cultural, spiritual, economic and political centres, where life and death were celebrated. The tour includes the famous Valley of the Kings, home to the tomb of Tutankhamun, and the Valley of the Queens, with its treasures such as the brilliantly coloured tomb of Nefertari.
The Egyptian afterlife
The journey ends with an incursion into the Egyptian afterlife, with the astronomical ceiling of Denderah within sight. This immersive experience reveals only a tiny part of the mysteries of ancient Egypt, encouraging visitors to discover more.
